How it's built — Dudung, My First Globe · v1.0 · 2026-11-04
■ Method
A globe drawn in the browser from pre-converted public data. No trained model
Globe: D3 orthographic projection, drag or arrow keys to rotate, zoom 0.72–8× (set values)
Flags mode: country flags painted as patterns on map boundaries. Separate pieces such as the contiguous US and Alaska get their own flag
Animals mode: 55 animals, each pinned to one place where it lives. Hand-drawn SVG art
Temperature mode: interpolated latitude–longitude grid, land only. Colour scale −40 to 40 °C; tapped values rounded to 1 °C
The two Kazakhstan points (Caspian Sea shore, northern grasslands) also show the difference between their grid values for the chosen month, rounded to 1 °C (about 9 °C for the yearly average)
Annual mean = monthly means weighted by the number of days in each month over 1991–2020
Read-aloud: the device's speech synthesis (Web Speech API), ko-KR in Korean, en-US in English. No recording, no microphone
English version (#en): one dictionary file keyed by the Korean sentences (i18n.en-11-04.js, about 370 sentences). Country names from the data's English names (name_en). Translated by hand (no LLM)
No LLM · no server (static files) · browser JavaScript, D3 7.9.0
■ Data
Temperature: NOAA PSL NCEP-NCAR Reanalysis 1, 2 m air temperature, 1991–2020 monthly normals (observations + weather model reanalysis) · 192×94 grid, about 200 km spacing · public data
Conversion: scripts/prepare-temperature-10-27-2234.py writes 13 layers (annual + 12 months) as int16 in 0.1 °C (469 KB). Source and grid SHA-256 recorded in the metadata
Countries: 194 (193 UN members + Vatican + Palestine − North Korea) + Greenland = 195. Korean names and continent grouping compiled by hand
Boundaries: Natural Earth 1:110m countries, 177 shapes · public domain
Flags: country-flag-icons SVG · MIT
No user input stored. Only the sound on/off setting is kept in this browser (localStorage)
■ Validation
Temperature grid SHA-256 matches the metadata (checked 2026-11-04)
Sample grid values (annual / Jan / Aug): Seoul 10.9 / −2.4 / 23.4 °C, Singapore 26.1 / 25.4 / 26.0 °C, Ulaanbaatar −1.0 / −21.4 / 16.6 °C
With a ~200 km grid, summers can read lower than city station normals (e.g. Seoul August normal about 26 °C)
Screen check: all three modes at 360, 375, 390 and 1366 px wide, no console errors (2026-11-04)
English version: after clicking through every mode, list and dialog automatically, the only Korean left on screen is the language button (2026-11-04)
■ Scope
Temperatures are 1991–2020 normals, not today's weather. Oceans are not coloured
Animal pins are one example location, not the whole range
Taiwan, Kosovo and North Korea are not in the country list. Map boundaries and the country list may differ in coverage
Audience: children around four and their grown-ups. No scores or right answers
